What is NZD/USD?

NZD/USD pairs the New Zealand Dollar against the United States Dollar. New Zealand's economy is small (under $300 billion GDP) but its currency is widely traded because of the country's historically high interest rates and its role as a carry-trade destination.

NZD moves similarly to AUD because both are commodity currencies sensitive to Chinese demand. NZD-specific drivers are dairy prices (Fonterra's GlobalDairyTrade auctions move the currency) and RBNZ policy. NZD/USD typically follows AUD/USD with a slight lag and smaller magnitude.

When to trade NZD/USD

NZD/USD's prime session is Sydney + Asian (5 PM to 3 AM ET). RBNZ decisions and the bulk of NZ economic data drop during these hours. The pair tends to set the day's high or low during the Asian session.

Avoid the late-NY window (3 to 5 PM ET) โ€” both Australasian and US desks are clearing, and the pair drifts in tight ranges with wide spreads.

News events that move NZD/USD

RBNZ rate decisions (seven per year) are the highest-impact NZD-specific events. Surprises can move NZD/USD 80 to 150 pips. NZ CPI (quarterly) and GDP (quarterly) routinely produce 40 to 80 pip moves.

Chinese data and dairy auction results also matter โ€” China is NZ's largest trading partner, and dairy is one of NZ's largest exports. Strong Chinese PMI or rising dairy prices support NZD; weak prints do the opposite.

NZD/USD FAQ

Why is NZD/USD called "Kiwi"?
The New Zealand one-dollar coin features a kiwi bird, New Zealand's national symbol. Traders adopted the nickname for the currency.
Is NZD/USD a good pair for beginners?
For mechanics (pip math, lot sizing), yes โ€” NZD/USD uses standard 4-decimal pips. For timing, the Sydney/Asian session bias makes it harder for US-hours traders to catch the prime moves.
How does dairy affect NZD?
Fonterra (NZ's dairy cooperative) runs the GlobalDairyTrade auction every two weeks. Strong auction prices support NZD; weak results pressure it. The correlation is modest but consistent.
When does RBNZ announce rates?
Seven scheduled meetings per year. Decisions release at 2:00 PM New Zealand time (typically 9 PM ET the prior evening or 10 PM during DST). The Monetary Policy Statement follows on quarterly meetings.
What is the typical spread on NZD/USD?
1.0 to 1.8 pips on most ECN brokers. Slightly wider than AUD/USD because of lower volume. Spreads compress during the Sydney open and the London-NY overlap.
