London Session
The London Session is the highest-volume single trading window in forex. From 3 AM to 12 PM ET (8 AM to 5 PM London time), London accounts for roughly 35% of daily global forex turnover. The London-NY overlap from 8 to 11 AM ET is when most directional moves of the day develop.
What is the London Session?
London is the financial capital of Europe and the world's largest single forex trading center. The London Session is when the City of London's banks, hedge funds, and institutional desks are at their desks transacting. Combined with the timezone advantage that catches both Asian close and US open, London handles roughly 35% of daily global forex turnover.
Volatility is highest during this window. The biggest single-day moves on EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and the EUR/JPY family typically happen between 3 AM and 12 PM ET. Practical implication: traders on US hours should plan around the London-NY overlap (8 to 11 AM ET) for the highest-conviction setups.
When to trade London
The London Session has three sub-windows worth knowing:
Pre-London (2 to 3 AM ET): Asian session is winding down, London desks are arriving. Limited liquidity but the first directional probes often happen here.
London core (3 to 8 AM ET): Full London participation. Daily ranges typically develop in this window. Best for pure-London-flow setups on EUR and GBP.
London-NY overlap (8 to 11 AM ET): Both London and US desks are active simultaneously. Highest volume of any 3-hour window in forex. Tightest spreads, biggest moves, best institutional-flow setups. This is the prime window for retail traders if you can only trade a few hours a day.
Best pairs to trade
London-session pairs are dominated by Europe-centric currencies:
- EUR/USD: highest-volume pair globally; London is its prime window. - GBP/USD: "Cable" is most active during London. Daily ranges of 80-120 pips are routine. - EUR/GBP: the "Chunnel." London open is its single biggest window. - USD/CHF and EUR/CHF: Swiss desks open with London. - EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY: yen-cross moves accelerate as London joins the Tokyo session winding down.
Skip USD/JPY-only or AUD-only setups during pure-London hours โ those pairs are more active in their home sessions (Tokyo and Sydney respectively).
Top pairs for this session: EUR/USD ยท GBP/USD ยท EUR/GBP ยท USD/CHF ยท EUR/CHF.
